These handmade instruments have lots of volume and clarity of tone. The neck and pillar are made of solid woods (choice of walnut or cherry). The soundbox is made of a sturdy laminated walnut or laminated cherry wood with solid wood corners and base. The soundboard is a special imported Baltic birch lamination. This provides exceptional strength with low weight, and allows the manufacturer to make cutouts on both the bottom and top ends of the string band. This opens up the soundboard and makes it free to vibrate over its entire surface, something that thicker, stiffer soundboards cannot do. Stoney End harps offer the best combination of good sound, and affordable price.
The 22-string Lap Harp makes a great travel harp, with a surprisingly sweet, clear tone. The 29-string Floor Harp has a full voice and a great range (starting at the second G below middle C) and is perfect for the budget-conscious beginner. Both the Lap Harp and the Floor Harp are now available in two models: High-headed Lap or Floor Harp (more of a gothic style) and Low-headed Lap or Floor Harp (traditional Irish shape).
